Joseph Haydn (1732-1809)
Joseph Hayden is the oldest of the three Vienna Classics. Theother both are Mozart (1756-1791) and Beethoven (1770-1827). Haydn createdmany famous symphonies like the Toy Symphony. Most of hiscompositions were called into being during his time on the court of PrinceNikolaus Joseph Esterhàzy in Eisenstadt. After the death of the Princehe moved to Vienna. The time between 1781 and 1791 was signed by his closefriendship to Mozart. This friendship can be felt very impressively in thecompositions of that time of both Haydn and Mozart. In 1791/92 andonce again in 1794/95 he visited London. There he presented his symphonieswith great success. Between these both stays in London, Beethoven was hispupil in Vienna. In this time Beethoven dedicated three of his piano sonatasto Haydn. In 1797 Haydn composed for the birthday of the Austrian Emperorthe Emperor Hymn Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser (God save Franzthe Emperor). The melody of this composition was the basis of the Germansong, which is the National Anthem of Germany since 1922 and also todayof the Federal Republic of Germany.
