The history of the Christmas Pickle

The "Christmas Pickle" is a German-American Christmas tradition. In thetradition, an ornamental pickle is placed on the Christmas tree as one ofthe Christmas decorations. On Christmas morning, the first person to findthe pickle on the tree would either receive an extra present or good fortunefor the next year.

The origin of the "Christmas Pickle" probably dates back to 1864. Duringthe American Civil War the Bavarian soldier John C. Lower was captured andthrown into prison. As the story tells, he was close to starvation on ChristmasEve. And so, out of mercy, a prison guard gave him a pickle as a gift, whichsaved him from certain death by starvation. When he returned to his familyafter the war, he began hanging a pickle on his Christmas tree every yearout of gratitude for surviving.

It was the time when the first mouth-blown glass ornaments for the Christmastree were sent from Germany to America so that immigrants of German origincould decorate their Christmas trees just like they did in their old homeland.When the Thuringian glassblowers heard about the "Christmas Pickle" tradition,they began making glass-blown Christmas ornaments in the shape of a pickleand selling them to America. The custom of hanging a glass-blown pickle onthe Christmas tree as a Christmas decoration quickly spread. Today, the"Christmas "Pickle" is made as a Christmas tree ornament in a wide varietyof shapes, materials and features - made of glass, fabric or wool. However,the custom of hanging a "Christmas Pickle" on the Christmas tree has remainedunchanged for more than 150 years and is now more popular than ever.
