Max Hermann
dedicated for his 125th Birthday
Max Hermann was born 125 years ago, on May 8th , 1899, as the son of thetoy maker Johann Hermann in the small mountain village of Neufang near thetown Sonneberg what was then the world toy city. Already as a teenager MaxHermann helped diligently in his father's toy business and learned from theground up on how to make good Teddy Bears. When father Johann Hermann diedin 1919, his son Max founded in 1920 in difficult, inflationary times 104years ago now under his own name "Max Hermann" in his parents' birthplacein Neufang his own small Teddy Bear factory. It had to go on somehow. Shortlyafterwards he moved his company's headquarter to Sonneberg, right in themiddle of the pulsating center of the world toy trade at the time. Here hefurther expanded his business in the "Golden Twenties" through his competenceand his export activities especially to England. Max Hermann recognized theimportance of trademarks early on and developed already in the early 1920sthe trademark "The Bear with the Running Dog in the Green Triangle" to identifyhis plush toys, which all of our Teddy Bears still bear today.
After World War II. Germany was divided into East and West. The state ofThuringia and with it the town Sonneberg were assigned to East-Germany. Afterthe border between East and West became more and more impenetrable, Max Hermanndecided to flee together with his family to the West via the last remainingopen loophole "Berlin" and continued from then on his Teddy Bear productionin Coburg, only a few kilometers from his old homeland away, but locatedon the western side of the "Iron Curtain", On September 23, 1955, Max Hermanndied suddenly and unexpectedly at the young age of 56. His last great decisionbefore he died was to lead his family to the West and his Teddy Bears toa secure future of peace and freedom.
Tipped Mohair
A little material knowledge
The tipped mohair plush is a very high-quality mohair plush where only thefine tips of the hairs are dyed in a darker colour. So-called "tipped" mohairplushes came into fashion in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Through acomplicated dyeing process that takes place in several steps, the plush weaversat that time developed a special technique that made it possible, after theactual dyeing process, to dye only the fine hair tips of the mohair plushin a darker color than the base colour in a further step. Tipped mohair plushhas always been in the high price segment. Nevertheless, they were oftenused to make Teddy Bears because they give the bearskin a particularly naturallook. As early as the late 1920s, we also used tipped mohair plush to produceour higher-quality Teddy Bears which were already on display in our catalogfrom the late 1920s and listed in the high-price class in our price listfrom 1932.
Teddy Bears stuffed with excelsior - a true treasure
Teddy Bears stuffed with excelsior belong to the rarity treasure of the TeddyBear world and are only rarely offered on the collector's market today. Whatused to be the daily work of the Teddy Bear makers in former times, has becomea valuable and rare treasure today. Worldwide there are only a handful ofexperts who are still familiar with the traditonal art of excelsior stuffing.Years of training, muscle strength and an artistic sense for styling arenecessary to carry out this very time-consuming work. Only very old andlong-standing manufactures have still the knowledge today, how Teddy Bearscan be stuffed with excelsior according to old example, so that nowadaysexcelsior stuffed Teddy Bears are hardly to find.
For more than 100 years, we have cultivated the tradition of stuffing ourTeddy Bears with excelsior and we have preserved for us this knowledge untilltoday. This gives our Teddy Bears their exceptional value and makes themto uncomparable and unique creatures with value-preserving character.
The Classic HERMANN Bear with inserted snout
Design Explanation
The "Bear with inserted snout" is a type of model developed by Max Hermannin the 1920s. For this model, the snout consists of a shorter-pile plushthan the bear itself. It is cut separately and sewn onto the bear's headpart. With this model variant, Max Hermann's Teddy Bears became known andfamous. Like hardly any other bear design, the "Bear with the inserted snout"is linked to the name HERMANN and has written history. Still today this designis the preferred Teddy Bear model in our company.
